You thought I was kidding

So last night I got to work on the boxes that have taken over the Cubs room. I had to wiggle and worm my way into the room because yes, it was that packed in there. When the door is opened, you are immediately faced with a wall of boxes. My boxes. Of all my crap. I took a deep breath and dove right in.

I mentioned in yesterdays post that I had some boxes that were from way back. I had no idea exactly how true that statement was. I took some photographic evidence so you wouldn't think I was exaggerating. Hold onto your socks folks, it's time to go back...waaaaay back...

Yes, you are looking at the original yellow Sony Walkman that was all the rage in the 80's. I might be able to stretch that into the early '90s too, just to make myself feel better. I loved this piece of electronic heaven. I cruised around school with it, I walked around the house with it, I even slept with it, the sweet sounds of music carrying me off into la la land. Please note the neon green crate it's placed in....another left over from my childhood days. I love how it's sitting on a bed of cassette tapes. I used to spend hours in my room making mix tapes from songs on the radio and stuff I already had. I would throw them into the Walkman or Lanie and I would listen to them when we cruised around in her Cougar. Those were the days:)

Next up we have my Paul McCartney record. I used to have a lot more vinyl but through my different moves and relationships and they have some how disappeared. Along with my extensive CD collection. That still burns me. All the CD's I had, starting with my first purchases of Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli, are gone. Outta here. Adios. Ce La Vie. That's just so wrong. Music should be treasured, not stolen.
I came across a ton of my old books. and that made me very happy! I love to read and used to burn through a book every couple weeks. That's when I had a whole lot more time on my hands. In 7th grade I started reading the V.C. Andrews collection and I was totally obsessed. There were a bunch of books in the series and I read them all, cover to cover.
Here we have a good example of how I have been carrying around random crap with me for over 10 years. You are looking at pieces of writing paper. There is nothing wrong with them so I can't bring myself to throw the away. You can tell from the pastel colors and paisley border that these born in the '80s but were never used. Maybe you're thinking "eh, it's just a couple pieces of paper, whats the big deal?" But times that by a hundred other examples of random stuff and you will see how I got into this predicament in the first place. Maybe I should start letter writing again? Forgot the convenience and speed of sending an email. Letter writing is a dying art form, and I should bring it back. Oooh oooh, I could go really old school and get an ink well and feather pen! Hmm....I'll need a proper writing desk to properly conduct this correspondence, naturally. Oh no, see what I'm doing here? In order to find a way to save the paper and use it I have added a bunch more stuff to bring in and join in on the overflowing mound of chaos. No no no. No ink well and feather pen. No writing desk. I have to break the cycle!
Don't be jealous, but yes, I came across my old school Swatch watches. One even has the face guard on it! Wow. am I aging myself right now? Remember when the one with the clear face was hot? Oooh, I can see inside the watch! I can see how it works. Gnarly! You know, I'm actually kind of liking the black and white Swatch....it's kind of ska ish. I might just rock that one, for old times sake.
Last, but most definitely not least. I have these two beauts. I cracked a box and had to laugh out loud. A VCR and a pair of my old Doc Martens. Wow. Talk about a throw back. The VCR served me well for many years, I'm ok with letting it rest in peace now. The Docs..wow. I lived in those shoes for most of my teenage years. I had all styles and colors, buying a new pair every summer when I went back to London to visit family. My favorite were my trusty black 8 hole steel toe boots, but the burgundy ones definitely had their time in the spotlight too.

Here is the how the room looked by the time I was done. Not only could I open the door without having to push against it just to slide in but the floor was exposed! Yay! Yes, there are still a ton of boxes in there to go through, but it's a good start. I feel good about the progress made and will keep working on it little by little.
The weird thing is, I have never been so pro active about unpacking before. As the examples I showed you today clearly state, I have moved boxes from place to place without ever even opening them. This is progress for me. Progress is good. I like progress.
