"The network of nerves in your baby's ears is better developed and more sensitive than before. He may now be able to hear both your voice and your partner's as you chat with each other. He's inhaling and exhaling small amounts of amniotic fluid, which is essential for the development of his lungs. These so-called breathing movements are also good practice for when he's born and takes that first gulp of air. And he's continuing to put on baby fat. He now weighs about a pound and two-thirds and measures 14 inches (about the size of an English hothouse cucumber!)" Babycenter.com
"Your baby is growing more dapper every day, as his eyebrows and eyelashes become more lush and the hair on his head grows longer and thicker. By this time, all the parts of your baby's eyes are in place -- and he'll be ready to open them and bat those eyelashes in just a few weeks. Your baby's spine is becoming stronger and more flexible, too. It's about the same length as the palm of your hand, but it contains a whopping 150 joints and some 1,000 ligaments." Parents .com
"The fetus makes breathing movements, but there is no air in the lungs yet. Hands are active and muscle coordination is such that they can get a thumb into the mouth. Thumb sucking calms the baby and strengthens the cheek and jaw muscles. The fetal brain scan will show response to touch. Touching and playing with the baby is possible now, as they may respond to your touch through your belly wall. Brain growth continues with brain wave activity for the visual and auditory systems starting to develop. Baby is probably very active in the womb, as the most active weeks are typically between weeks 24 and 28." Babytosee.com
Mom-to-be:
"The baby's constant movements should be reassuring. You'll be putting on weight at the rate of about 1 pound per week now. You may be feeling some rib pain as your baby grows and pushes upward on your rib cage. The pressure may also be causing indigestion and heartburn. You may even be feeling stitch-like pains down the sides of your abdomen as your uterine muscle stretches." Webmd.com
My little boy is growing....can't wait to see the new ultrasound photos next week!
Going for it
Sunday I was feeling especially adventurous so I decided to do some cooking and baking. Rob was a good sport and opened wide every time I came at him with a wooden spoon saying "try this."
First off I made a pasta salad. I have been craving something light and fresh and this fit the bill. I chopped up some green and red bell peppers to give it some crunch and texture and it came out very refreshing!
Next up were banana nut muffins. I never have time for breakfast so have been drinking those Carnation instant breakfasts, or eating Captain Crunch at work. I didn't want to buy muffins from the store, so I thought what the heck, I'll give it a go. They took less then half an hour to make and I have been enjoying them in the morning ever since. Add some margerine to them when warm and presto! A delicious breakfast (or anytime) treat!
Lastly I took a stab at the classic, chocolate chip cookies. In the past the most experimental I have gotten was buying the ready made cookie dough from the store, schalping it onto a cookie sheet and throwing them in the oven. Not surprisingly, I would still burn the shit out of them. This time I decided to make them from scratch and take my time. I added in some walnuts for a little crunch and I'm glad I did, it makes a difference. My only complaint is that they are a little crumbly when you bite into them, but you actually forget about that because the cookie itself is yummers.

Tonight I am trying my hand at pot roast. I chopped up carrots, celery, onions and potatoes last night and stored them in the fridge so it would be a snap to throw together today. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Baby Warmers

Baby leg warmers are a great idea. They keep little chubby baby legs from getting cold, they protect little baby knees when they start to crawl, they make diaper changes much easier then taking off pants....plus they are just totally cute and fun!
Check out the two pairs I got at Target. I couldn't resist!

For the Cub
As you know, I love anything kitchy. There's a cool website called "Perpetual Kid" that has all kinds of kooky, cute goodies on it. This is one of my favorite things. The Super Snapsuit! How awesome would the cub look in this?!!!
New addition
So here is how the wall looked before, all plain and sad and begging for some life

This is my wonderful boyfriend putting the book case together, even though it was about 10:30pm

Yay! It's finally in place!

The common sense thing to do at this point would have been go to bed, but Rob and I were too excited and dove right into putting our stuff on display

I'm stoked on how it turned out. It give the room a more warm and lived in feel and makes it not feel so empty. Some people might feel this is too cluttered, and prefer to put their books and dvds behind a door, out of sight. I don't mind having everything out, I actually prefer it. And apparently, so does Cuddles....look at her below trying to be all incognito lol.
What a crock
I hate being sick. It rarely ever happens, and even when it does, i usually just suck it up and keep going. But I was out of commission on Monday and Tuesday and just couldn't muster the strength to make it to work. It might have something to do with carrying and growing a human life inside my belly that is zapping my energy and made it impossible to fight through it this time, but who knows. I have a sneaking suspicion that I got food poisoning and that's never fun. And before you ask, no, it wasn't my cooking. Why is that everyone's first assumption? I went to Red Robin on Sunday for lunch with Shirley and it just may have been my trusty chicken sandwich. It's the first time I have ever gotten sick from eating there, and I have been going since high school (yea, that's a long time) so I'm not going to hold it against them.
Since I was home, I decided to at least be productive. Wait, huh? What? Usually I jump on the chance to actually have an excuse to stay in bed all day and do nothing. Instead, I did the laundry, cleaned the bathroom, emptied the dishwasher and made dinner. Tina had me all drooly over this pulled pork recipe that she brought into work a few weeks ago, so I gave the crock pot it's first shot at impressing me. Consider me officially impressed. Not only was it super dooper easy, but the whole house smelled yummy! When Rob came home, the scent of bbq and brown sugar filled the house, and who's going to say no to that? I think it's usually served on a roll or bun, but we decided to do a baked potato and salad with it instead. It was yummy and filling and did I mention super easy?
Another go round
This time I attempted cheesecake cookie bars. The recipe had a picture (of course) and they looked pretty yummy! I gathered my ingredients and hoped for the best. I even broke out my kitchen aid mixer which I have just been too intimated to use until now. Um, can I just say, it's fricken awesome!

It said to bake for 35 mins but I wasn't going to make that mistake again, so I checked them at 20 minutes and took them out at 25. I was itching to cut them up right away put forced myself to just walk away. Once they had cooled down, I sliced them up and taa daaaa! Cheesecake cookie bars!
I was relieved and super stoked I didn't mess this one up. They taste as good as they look!
All me

If you know me well enough, you know that one of my favorite sayings is "keep calm and carry on." For that reason, I heart this rug. Too bad it's almost $700. Boo!

She likes human food
You thought I was kidding
I mentioned in yesterdays post that I had some boxes that were from way back. I had no idea exactly how true that statement was. I took some photographic evidence so you wouldn't think I was exaggerating. Hold onto your socks folks, it's time to go back...waaaaay back...
Yes, you are looking at the original yellow Sony Walkman that was all the rage in the 80's. I might be able to stretch that into the early '90s too, just to make myself feel better. I loved this piece of electronic heaven. I cruised around school with it, I walked around the house with it, I even slept with it, the sweet sounds of music carrying me off into la la land. Please note the neon green crate it's placed in....another left over from my childhood days. I love how it's sitting on a bed of cassette tapes. I used to spend hours in my room making mix tapes from songs on the radio and stuff I already had. I would throw them into the Walkman or Lanie and I would listen to them when we cruised around in her Cougar. Those were the days:)

Next up we have my Paul McCartney record. I used to have a lot more vinyl but through my different moves and relationships and they have some how disappeared. Along with my extensive CD collection. That still burns me. All the CD's I had, starting with my first purchases of Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli, are gone. Outta here. Adios. Ce La Vie. That's just so wrong. Music should be treasured, not stolen.

I came across a ton of my old books. and that made me very happy! I love to read and used to burn through a book every couple weeks. That's when I had a whole lot more time on my hands. In 7th grade I started reading the V.C. Andrews collection and I was totally obsessed. There were a bunch of books in the series and I read them all, cover to cover.

Here we have a good example of how I have been carrying around random crap with me for over 10 years. You are looking at pieces of writing paper. There is nothing wrong with them so I can't bring myself to throw the away. You can tell from the pastel colors and paisley border that these born in the '80s but were never used. Maybe you're thinking "eh, it's just a couple pieces of paper, whats the big deal?" But times that by a hundred other examples of random stuff and you will see how I got into this predicament in the first place. Maybe I should start letter writing again? Forgot the convenience and speed of sending an email. Letter writing is a dying art form, and I should bring it back. Oooh oooh, I could go really old school and get an ink well and feather pen! Hmm....I'll need a proper writing desk to properly conduct this correspondence, naturally. Oh no, see what I'm doing here? In order to find a way to save the paper and use it I have added a bunch more stuff to bring in and join in on the overflowing mound of chaos. No no no. No ink well and feather pen. No writing desk. I have to break the cycle!

Don't be jealous, but yes, I came across my old school Swatch watches. One even has the face guard on it! Wow. am I aging myself right now? Remember when the one with the clear face was hot? Oooh, I can see inside the watch! I can see how it works. Gnarly! You know, I'm actually kind of liking the black and white Swatch....it's kind of ska ish. I might just rock that one, for old times sake.

Last, but most definitely not least. I have these two beauts. I cracked a box and had to laugh out loud. A VCR and a pair of my old Doc Martens. Wow. Talk about a throw back. The VCR served me well for many years, I'm ok with letting it rest in peace now. The Docs..wow. I lived in those shoes for most of my teenage years. I had all styles and colors, buying a new pair every summer when I went back to London to visit family. My favorite were my trusty black 8 hole steel toe boots, but the burgundy ones definitely had their time in the spotlight too.

Here is the how the room looked by the time I was done. Not only could I open the door without having to push against it just to slide in but the floor was exposed! Yay! Yes, there are still a ton of boxes in there to go through, but it's a good start. I feel good about the progress made and will keep working on it little by little.

The weird thing is, I have never been so pro active about unpacking before. As the examples I showed you today clearly state, I have moved boxes from place to place without ever even opening them. This is progress for me. Progress is good. I like progress.

Hearty Meal
For dinner I made meatloaf, mashed potatoes and corn with salad. I chopped onions, cracked open eggs and measured out breadcrumbs while Rob sat at the counter and worked on his computer. Very domestic and very rad.

An hour later, add some salad, candles, Crystal Light pink lemonade and the man you love and viola! Dinner is served.
Total Score
Lookey lookey what I got! A crock pot! I decided to step over Target with their $35.00 price tag and head straight to my favorite place to shop...craigslist! I picked up this 5 quart beauty for $17.00, and she even through in some liner bags. It's in perfect condition, used only once or twice. Jackpot!
It's a sickness I tell you

I need help. Professional help. I need this book.
I have a terrible tendency to hold on to things, random things, forever. I carry around the same stuff that I've had since I was in high school from home to home. I have a binder full of notes that Lanie and I used to write in high school. I have trinkets that aren't even cute, but I hold on to because I'm sentimental. My mistake is placing an emotional attachment on everything. Its makes it near impossible to part with.
I have gotten better over the years. Lanie introduced me to something we like to call "Goosamano Syndrome" and it has helped me get rid of a lot of clutter that has been following me around my whole life. But after moving into the Jungle House, I realize that there are tons of boxes full of stuff that haven't even been opened or sorted through for quite some time. How much time exactly? Well, there are some boxes that got moved from my apartment on Elden to my old house in 2007 and then moved from there to my new place a few weeks ago. They hadn't been opened during that whole time. That's 2 years. Two whole years of never even getting around to go through them and see whats inside. It gets better. I came across a box the other day that had my graduation cap and theater awards in it. That box would be from my first apartment. Back when I was 21. I'm 33 now. I'm cringing.
But here is my revelation. I don't have to have a coronary thinking about having to chuck the whole lot. I can keep some of the stuff that has real sentimental value (like my grad cap and notes from Lanie-ah to read what we thought were big problems back then) but I have to get rid of the other stuff. The plastic bag that has scraps of paper in it because I might use it one day...that has to go. The 17 bath sets I have gotten over the years, I need to move on. You know the things I'm talking about right? They have 5 bottles of fruity bubble bath, sponges etc. Problem is, I don't do baths. I'm a shower girl. I have no use for the gift sets. They are lovely to look and smell delicious. Someone spent time picking them out, money on them. I couldn't just get rid of them. Maybe one day I will get around to using them. Maybe one day I will feel the urge to take a bath. But then again, that's what I said years ago when I decided to hold on to them. If you're a bath person, hit me up. I can hook you up so you will smell like vanilla fields and grapefruit wonder.
This is a great article that has me pegged big time. oooh, you're good Real Simple Magazine!
I have a huge project in front of me. The Cubs room is full of boxes and I need to go through them soon. I can't hold onto everything because there is just no room for it. I need to be strong. I need to purge. I need to kick some pack rat ass.

Grubs up

I think I got a little over excited because I tried to make chocolate and peanut butter brownies for dessert and yea...that didn't turn out so well. I suck at baking. Even though I checked it a good 10 mins before it was supposed to be done, the bottom was all burned. The rest of it wasn't so much brownie like, more crunchy with some soft parts. Basically, it was a mess. It kind of reminded me of that scene in "Clueless" when Cher burns the cookies and the guys says "Oh honey! you baked!" Stupid brownies.
A couple of likeys
Urban Outfitters is one of those stores that I can always find something I like. They have great accessories and kitschy cool decor items. If you know me, you know I'm all about the kitsch. If it's totally weird and obscure to most people, there's a good chance I'm going to dig it.
Here are a couple things that caught my eye which if (I said IF) I was still in shopping-with-wild-abandonment mode, I may have ran right out and purchased. But for now, I'm perfectly content admiring them from afar.
I haven't seen any diaper bags that I like (where is it written that they have to be so...so...baby like? Eck!) so this would be my version. I love the color and the ability to wear as a messenger bag. $68.00

I love this coat rack because it reminds me of one we had when I was a kid. It comes in different colors, but I love the yellow. It's a nice pop of color without being overkill. $68.00

I love Buddhas. I have a small collection of them in different colors and sizes and I have to say, they just make me happy. Some are more traditional, others are more quirky. I think they're totally adorable and give me a sense of calm when I need it. This little guy wants to come home with me. No really, he does. I can see it in the gleam of his eye. He's like "psssst....buy me....take me home....we could be very happy together." Not only is he a rad little statue, he's also a light! Gimmie Gimmie! $38.00
Hard at work
From babycenter.com"How your baby's growing at 24 weeks along
Your baby's growing steadily, having gained about 4 ounces since last week. That puts him at just over a pound. Since he's almost a foot long (picture an ear of corn), he cuts a pretty lean figure at this point, but his body is filling out proportionally and he'll soon start to plump up. His brain is also growing quickly now, and his taste buds are continuing to develop. His lungs are developing "branches" of the respiratory "tree" as well as cells that produce surfactant, a substance that will help his air sacs inflate once he hits the outside world. His skin is still thin and translucent, but that will start to change soon."
I'm growing a baby brain today! What did YOU do?

Weekend Warrior
The baby is kicking so much these days. I always thought this was the part that was going to freak me out. I imagined the movie "Aliens" and something trying to punch its way out of my stomach...eck! But, surprisingly, it's not that weird. It's actually pretty amazing and wonderful. I'm at 24 weeks along now and 2 weeks shy of being 6 months pregnant! How did this happen? I mean, I know how it happened lol. But, I mean, how am I almost 6 months pregnant? Wow. Sometimes I can hardly believe it. It's already that time to sign up for classes, start getting serious about a name, register for the baby shower. It blows my mind how things can be so difficult and emotionally trying one second and then beautiful and hopeful the next. Life is weird that way. Not having control over circumstances is truly terrifying, but sometimes you just have to believe, trust and have faith that things will work out the way they are supposed to.
We took a trip out to AZ this past weekend to grab some stuff and even though it takes 5 1/2-6 hours on the road (each way) it was still fun. One of the coolest things? We bought the bike back with us! Yay! Rob strapped it in the back of the truck like a steel horse cruising through the desert. I heart that bike so much. I only got to ride on it a few times before I got pregnant and I can't wait to get back on. There is something unbelievably sexy about my man starting up the bike, the growl of the engine, cruising in the open air. It's really freeing and everyone should experience it at least once in their life.Even though we were exhausted from the trip and packing up stuff in AZ and then unloading in CA, we still managed to sit down and have some dinner together instead of running out to get grab fast food. It wasn't the most creative meal, but hey, you have to cut me some slack due to exhaustion. I threw together chicken teriyaki meatballs with fries (thank you again to Sams Club) and salad. After dinner (it's now about 10pm) my wonderful boyfriend kept on going and put the bed together! What a guy! I know he was completely beat but he still made it happen, and not one single grunt or groan! I opened up brand new sheets and made up the bed and ta da! The bedroom actually looks like a bedroom!

I heart the Jungle House. I heart my love and my cub. It's all coming together......happy zen land indeed!

Cub and couches and corden Bleu, oh my!
Once we got home we did a little work around the house, unpacked some boxes, hung some curtains. It's starting to look pretty good:) I got a call about some free couches I found on Craigslist so we picked up Josh and went to go grab them up. On the way there, we were throwing out possible reasons why they were free, because in the ad they looked to be in pretty good condition. Did someone die on them? Would we know if they did? Maybe they are the worlds most uncomfortable couches? The main suspicion was a nasty smell of some kind. Maybe a pet smell? Body odor? Poop? I took on the very important but highly underrated job of being the couch sniffer once we got there. If they had even a slight odor, we would turn around and walk out the door empty handed. But maybe, just maybe, they were good couches with no foul odor and no dead guy residue.
Once we got there I sniffed, I sat, I tested, I approved! They're not the newest couches in the whole world, and the ottoman is a totally different color, but they're free! And truth be told, pretty comfy. And now on to why they were free. The girl explained that she had moved into the apartment and they were left there by the previous tenant. She has her own couches so needed to get rid them so hers would fit. She placed them on Craigslist for $100, then $80 then $60 but people were flaky and said they'd come by but didn't. She was tired of the hassle so posted them from free and bam! We picked them up that night.
You're wondering why the previous tenant left them there in the first place aren't you? Well, it's because the apartment is located on the second floor. With no elevator. Good times. But Rob and Josh didn't even blink an eye. No grumbling, no frustration. Smiles on faces the whole time. Within 5 minutes they had both couches and the ottoman loaded up in the truck and we were on our way home! Yay!
Once we finally made it back to the Jungle House it was almost 8:30pm and we were starving. As they unloaded the couches and Rob dropped Josh back at home...guess what I did? Ok by the title of this blog and the picture to the left, I'm sure you have figured it out. But without those clues, I'm sure you're first thought would have been either a) flop down on new-to-us couch and watch some tv or b) go grab some food for us from somewhere down the street. Well, you'd be wrong! I did neither of those things. Instead, I made dinner. Again. I know, I know. Chicken Cordon Bleu with steamed veggies, baked potato and salad. Ok, I admit, the chicken cordon bleu was frozen from Sams Club, but still...pretty good right? I really should have taken the photo after I put the sour cream and cheese on the potato, it's looking a little on the dry side, but it was good, trust me:)

Pretty Standard
I'm finding it's the little things in life that make me the happiest. Doing a load of laundry together. Sitting on the floor and rough housing with the dogs. Waking up next to the love of my life. Life is much quieter these days. I knew it would be and I had wondered how that would effect me. I'm happy to report that it effects me in a lot of good ways. I'm excited to come home. To kiss my man, to hug my animals. To hang out. To watch a movie. Working on the house is fun to me. We have gotten a lot done but still have a lot to do. The unusual thing (for me anyway) is that I'm not rushing into it. I'm not stressed about getting everything unpacked in a week, or freaking out that we don't have any curtains yet. I'm just here, doing my thing. Taking it one day at a time.
Happy zen land continues...
Cooking with Metallica
So you can see why me deciding on a last minute pregnancy induced whim of steak fajitas was a risky choice. Especially for my first real time cooking dinner for Rob. This could go terribly terribly wrong. Would he care? No, probably not. But I would be bummed and scarred from trying to cook again. I wandered around the store some more but I just couldn't get the taste of steak fajitas out of my mind. I had a decision to make. Call Rob and tell him we're going to Acapulco's for dinner, or bite the bullet and give cooking it a shot. Well, consider the bullet bitten. Yea, that's right. Me! I grabbed some onions, bell peppers, tortillas, meat, fajita seasoning, sour cream and fresh pico di gallo and didn't look back.
Once I got home, there was a little issue with the washing machine. The pipe was all jacked up and we sprung a major leak. All of a sudden I saw Rob jump up and run outside to turn the water main off and even though he did it lickity split, we were still ankle deep in water. (Note to self: buy a mop!) The weird thing? No tempers flared, no one freaking out or yelling. I think we even looked at each other at one point and laughed. Hmm.....this is sorta nice! We used all the towels in the house to soak it up and then turned on the fan to dry it up and wadaya know, we were good as new. Well, almost good as new. The downside is we had no water for the rest of the night. This would have been a perfect excuse for me to duck out of making dinner. But strangely, that didn't happen. I just kind of looked at Rob and said "are you hungry?" and he said "yea" and I said "ok, I'll start on dinner." Whaaa? Did that really just happen? Did those words really just come out of my mouth? Wow! That's pretty domestic (as my Skillet would say.)
I had no recipe, no step by step instructions and no picture to go off of, but I just went for it. I threw my iPod on the Bose, turned up some Metallica and dove right in. I chopped up the red and green bell peppers, then the onion. I put a little oil in the pan, started adding my ingredients...and it was a success! Rob had seconds and thirds and even fourths, that was a great feeling:) I was pretty pleased with myself, I have to say. Don't worry, I told him not to expect this kind of enthusiasm from me every day, or even every week. Just be happy when it happens, I told him.
This may have just been a total one off, who knows. What I do know is, I cooked dinner and for me, that's huge. Baby steps.....

Happy Home
Here we are, 23 weeks, 2 days along in the pregnancy. 58.5% done with 117 more days to go. Besides feeling tired, everything is great. Ok, it takes me a little longer to get out of the car or out of my chair, and I kind of have that waddle thing going on, but not too much. I was getting worried because I felt no movement from the Cub for over a week and he had been pretty active before. But as soon as we moved into the house, he has been having a party in there. Jumping jacks, somersaults, flips, the whole bit. I haven't felt a hard kick yet, but that should be coming any day now. He's pretty happy to have a place to call home, and even has his own room! Granted, said room is packed full of boxes right now, but it's his room none the less.
Am I supposed to have certain things figured out by now? I read in magazines and blogs that by now, expectant Mom's have a name picked out, colors, a theme for the room. They have registered for baby shower items, signed up for their lamaze classed and practically have their hospital stay suitcase packed. Um, yea. I'm a little slow on the uptake I guess because out of all the above things I mentioned, I have done..well...none. And the funny thing is, I'm ok with that. I don't feel panicked or rushed. I think I'm just going at my own pace. There are so many other things that have been consuming my mind and time for the past 3 months that I just don't think I have given it much thought. But now with things slowly coming together, I might just be able to start crossing things off the baby-to-do list.
The top priority on that list was find a place to live. Roger that, 10-4, big check mark next to this line item! Yay! Is it weird that I'm still totally giddy about our new digs? It's our little diamond in the rough. We got all the kitchen stuff unpacked on Sunday night and went through all the boxes in the dining room area. We have definitely made some progress. Last night we made our first big shopping trip and now with food in the house, it's starting to feel a lot like home. The two doggies (shar-peis) are enjoying their new surroundings and as you can see from the photo, love lying in the sun and taking a nap. There is still a lot of unpacking to do and things to be hung, organized and put in it's place, but I love the Jungle House and know it will all come together soon. There is a real sense of calm there. No need to have everything perfect, which in hindsight I think I felt in the past. I love that the house is old and not a whole lot matches. There are chips in the paint and the bedroom door has a major creak when you open it. It's totally different from my last place. I loved that place, but this is a whole other world, a whole other vibe. More laid back. More chill. More happy zen land.
I'm happy here.

Home Sweet Home
The house has beautiful wood floors, a nice big kitchen and tons of character. Even though it's only a 2 bedroom/1 bathroom, it's perfect. It's a little nutty, a little kooky, but it fits us perfectly. It's called the Jungle House because it's pretty much hidden from the street by plants, trees and foliage. There's a funky gate in the front made out of wood that looks like something straight out of between Gilligan's Island. We've got the two dogs running around, plus one cat, and my cat will soon be joining us too. The house has a great flow to it, perfect for raising a little one or entertaining. Or both! Yea...I like both! :)
The big move is tomorrow so hopefully everything goes smoothly! I am so incredibly happy that things have taken a turn for the better. Now I need to get cracking on the baby's room!
