Burning up

I have officially entered the third trimester! Wow! I have to get the cubs room in order. Still so many boxes to go through and organize. I can't believe there is only 93 more days to go. I'm officially 67% done and I'm happy to report that I'm feeling great. Well, there is one thing. Heartburn. Oh. My. Gosh. I have never had it before and didn't know what was happening when I was sitting at work the other day and suddenly my throat was on fire. It felt like it was creeping up esophagus and flames were going to come shooting out of my mouth . I turned to Tina to diagnosis me and that's when she told me (while laughing at me) "yep, that's heartburn." That is not a fun thing. In fact, that's the opposite of fun!

Here's the deal, according to babycenter.com : "Heartburn (also called acid indigestion or acid reflux) is a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of the breastbone to the lower throat. It's caused by some of the hormonal and physical changes in your body.

During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation.

Progesterone also slows down the wavelike contractions of your esophagus and intestines, making digestion sluggish. Later in pregnancy, your growing baby crowds your abdominal cavity, pushing the stomach acids back up into the esophagus."

Good times on that. But honestly, I know it could be a whole lot worse. Considering I'm in my 6th month and haven't had any big problems, I'll take the heartburn like a champ.
